How to Compare Prop Firms: A Practical Due-Diligence Checklist

Evaluate a prop firm beyond discounts by checking its legal identity, rule clarity, account structure, platforms, payouts and support.

A discount or large account balance cannot tell you whether a prop firm fits your strategy. Good due diligence begins with verifiable information: who operates the service, where the terms are published, how the evaluation is structured and what happens after a rule breach. The goal is not to find a firm with no restrictions. It is to find a transparent rule set that you can understand, monitor and follow consistently.

Check the company and the product

Confirm the legal entity, contact channels, eligibility restrictions and the nature of the account. Many online prop programs use simulated trading environments, even after an evaluation is passed. Compare account sizes only after translating daily and total loss limits into money. Note whether drawdown is static or trailing, whether targets and limits change after evaluation, and which costs—commission, spread, swap, data or platform fees—apply.

Read payout and strategy rules

Review the first eligible payout date, minimum profitable days, reward split, withdrawal thresholds and any consistency calculation. Check policies for news, overnight and weekend positions, expert advisers, copy trading, multiple accounts, IP or device use and prohibited strategies. Search the official help center for recent updates and test support with a precise question. Save the terms shown at purchase, because promotions and program rules can change.
